Shapefile template user guide

IN THIS ARTICLE:

Purpose

To aid the successful submission of referral spatial data, DWER have made available a shapefile template for Planning Advice. The template is designed to ensure compliance with the required validation standards, effectively expediting the submission process.

  1. Selecting a boundary from preset datasets which include Cadastre, Mining tenements, and Petroleum titles
  2. Uploading a boundary in zipped shapefile format
  3. Drawing a boundary

Spatial data provided must confirm to the following parameters:

  • Format: shapefile
  • Data type: closed polygons that represent the area/s related to the request
  • Attribution: Fields have been provided in the template shapefile to capture general descriptions of the works related to the request
  • Coordinate System: GDA2020, projected into the appropriate Map Grid of Australia (MGA) zone

***Please ensure that no invalid geometries (null geometry, self-intersects etc) exist before submission, as shapefiles containing geometry errors will not be accepted. ***

Usage: Delineates the area/s subject to the planning advice request

Terminology


Shapefile: A file that contains geospatial data, such as the location and shape of geographic features and their attributes. These can include buildings, land parcels (lots), or other areas. You can use a shapefile to create maps, analyse spatial patterns, or perform other GIS tasks.
Shapefile template: A file that contains the structure and format of a shapefile.
Geographic Coordinate System (GCS): A Geographic Coordinate System is a reference framework used to define the location of features on the surface of the Earth.
Zipped: compression with standard windows folder zip tool. Zip should contain all (and only) the extensions of a shapefile  (.shp .shx .prj .dbf .sbn .sbx .cpg)
