Environment Online - Collection Notice

Why we collect your information

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) collects your personal information through Environment Online to:

  • Process applications, registrations, and requests
  • Administer licences, permits, and approvals
  • Support compliance, monitoring, and enforcement activities
  • Communicate with you about your transactions and regulatory obligations
  • Improve the delivery of our services

We only collect personal information that is reasonably necessary to perform these functions.


What information we collect

The types of personal information we may collect include:

  • Name and contact details (e.g. address, email, phone number)
  • Organisation and business details (if applicable)
  • Information provided in applications, forms, or supporting documents
  • Records of your interactions and transactions with us

In some cases, we may collect sensitive information where it is required and authorised by law.


How your information is used and shared

The Department will handle your personal information in accordance with the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) and applicable DWER privacy policies including the EO Privacy Policy. Information is stored securely in systems including Environment Online and protected from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.

Your personal information will be used for the purpose for which it was collected, or for a related purpose where permitted by law.

We may share your information with:

  • Other WA Government agencies
  • Regulatory or enforcement bodies
  • Service providers supporting Environment Online and DWER systems
  • Other parties where required or authorised by law

Information will only be shared where it is necessary and appropriate to support service delivery or regulatory functions. For more information, see DWER’s General Collection Notice.


Consequences of not providing information

Providing your personal information is required to enable the Department to process applications, registrations and regulatory transactions through Environment Online. If you choose not to provide requested information, we may be unable to provide the requested service.


Legal authority

You are required to provide this personal information as a result of legislation administered by DWER, including (where applicable) the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (WA), Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914 (WA), and associated regulatory frameworks.


Storage and security

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure. Information is stored in secure systems, including the Environment Online platform.


Access and correction

If you believe that personal information that is held about you in connection with Environment Online is incorrect, incomplete or out-of-date, then please check your Environment Online My Account details, myID, WARAM or your organisation’s Entra ID before contacting the Department’s Freedom of Information Coordinator.
